The Undine (Latin: Unda — a wave), also called ondines, are water elementals or spirits. Like all nymphs, they are very beautiful, and immortal. However, should one fall in love with a mortal man and bear his child, she will lose her immortality.
This legend always seemed to me very bittersweet, and the poignancy of forsaken love comes through on this canvas.
